Arson suspect seen eating peanut butter while watching blaze

COLUMBIA, South Carolina – Police in Columbia say it was easy to find the suspect in the burning of a pickup truck at a Columbia car dealership.

He was sitting on another vehicle, eating from a jar of peanut butter as he watched the blaze.

Authorities said 20-year-old Cody Allen has been charged with third-degree arson and malicious injury to property.

Firefighters were called to the Dick Smith dealership around 4 a.m. When they arrived, authorities say they found the truck on fire and several other vehicles with their windows broken out.  More

Worker gets fired for using fake dime decades ago

DES MOINES – Wells Fargo Home Mortgage has fired a Des Moines worker over a 1963 incident at a Laundromat involving a fake dime in the wake of new employment guidelines.

Richard Eggers, 68, was fired from his job as a customer service representative for putting a cardboard cutout of a dime in a washing machine nearly 50 years ago in Carlisle.

Warren County court records show Eggers was convicted of operating a coin-changing machine by false means. Eggers called it a “stupid stunt,” but questions his firing.

Big banks have been firing low-level employees like Eggers since new federal banking employment guidelines were enacted in May 2011 and new mortgage employment guidelines took hold in February.

The tougher standards are meant to clear out executives and mid-level bank employees guilty of transactional crimes - such as identity theft and money laundering – but are being applied across the board because of possible fines for noncompliance.  More

Wisconsin – A Saudi Arabian man who police say has returned to his country was charged with attempted sexual assault after he allegedly talked his way in to a neighbor’s apartment in Madison.

The incident was one of three within five days in which Riyad M. Alsulaiman, 24, allegedly approached women who had cats and asked to pet them in order to get into their apartments.

One woman said that she was on her balcony when a man later identified as Alsulaiman asked for a light for his cigarette, then asked to come up and pet her cat.

He offered repeatedly to give her a massage and wouldn’t leave her apartment even after she asked him several times.

The woman told police that despite her refusals, he removed her clothes and tried to have intercourse with her.  More

Woman fired shotgun during argument over gun control

Oregon – During an alcohol-fueled argument over gun control, an Aloha woman fired a shotgun inside her own home, shooting out a softball-sized hole from the wall.

No one was hurt but a neighbor’s house sustained thousands of dollars in damage.

“Alcohol and firearms never mix. The two should never be used together. We’re very fortunate that no one was injured,” said Lt. Bob Ray, a spokesman for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Susan Fleming, 51, is charged with unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, recklessly endangering another person and second-degree criminal mischief.  More

Snake bites man, man bites snake back

Nepal – A Nepali farmer exacted revenge on a cobra by biting the snake back and killing it after it had attacked him.

Mohammed Salmodin was working in his rice paddy field in a village about 125 miles south of Kathmandu when he came upon the snake.

“A snake charmer told me that if a snake bites you, bite it until it is dead and nothing will happen to you,” Salmodin explained.

Family members later convinced Salmodin to go to a hospital for treatment of his bite, but he has since been released.  More

Topless babysitter found passed out in parking lot

Florida – A topless babysitter found lying in a hotel parking lot faces charges after Melbourne police said she failed to watch over a 5-year-old boy whose mother had gone gambling.

Stacey Kerres, 47, of Fort Pierce, was charged with child neglect after Melbourne police were called to investigate reports of a child found alone for nearly an hour in the River Palm Hotel, 420 S. Harbor City Blvd.

Police talked to the child, who was sitting with the hotel staff playing a video game, told them his mother had gone to the casino and that his mother left him with a woman named Stacey.  More

Kidney for Ohio transplant put in trash

TOLEDO, Ohio – A health commissioner says a nurse accidentally disposed of a kidney from a living donor at an Ohio hospital that later suspended its kidney transplant program.

The University of Toledo Medical Center suspended the program after the botched transplant earlier this month.

The Blade newspaper reported that a kidney donated by a man to his older sister was thrown away with medical waste in what medical experts describe as a rare accident.

The Toledo-Lucas County health commissioner confirms a nurse disposed of the kidney.  More

Norwegian gallery loses a Rembrandt in the mail

Oslo, Norway – A Norwegian art gallery lost a Rembrandt etching worth up to $8,600 in the mail after trying to save money on courier and insurance costs, the gallery’s chief said.

The Soli Brug Gallery in Greaaker, about 80 kilometres south of Oslo, purchased a copy of Rembrandt’s ‘Lieven Willemsz, van Coppenol, Writing-Master’ made in around 1658 from a British dealer, only to have it lost in the Norwegian postal system.

“Using a courier or special insurance is quite expensive so we have used regular mail until now,” Ole Derje, the gallery’s chairman said.

Derje said his gallery received notice to pick up the package but when he went to collect it, it was nowhere to be found.  More

Man spent $1,600 at 7-11

PALMYRA – Police are searching for a man who bought more than $1,600 worth of items from 7-Eleven with stolen credit cards.

The man went to the convenience store on Route 73 shortly after 5 a.m. and used the cards to buy $1,633 worth of merchandise, police said.

The cards were reported stolen in neighboring Cinnaminson.

The man’s image was captured by video surveillance equipment at the store wearing a wearing a red Nike baseball cap.  More

True Romance: Couple arrested, then engaged

San Antonio, Texas – A man proposed to his girlfriend immediately after the couple was arrested for aggravated robbery, San Antonio, police said.

Managers of a Family Dollar Store said they attempted to stop Treila Woods, 24, before she left the store, suspecting her of shoplifting.

The alleged driver of her getaway car, Sean Foxx, 24, watched her attempt to leave through a broken and unmoving door, and came inside to help her, police said.

“He sees she’s in trouble so he goes on in the store to try to help her escape.”

Foxx and Woods were arrested a short time later, after which Foxx proposed marriage and Woods accepted.  More

Wounded veteran receives new home from nonprofit, Kid Rock

Michigan – A wounded war veteran and his wife looking for a new house in Michigan were in for a surprise when they walked into a model home and found their friends, family and musician Kid Rock waiting inside.

The Grammy-nominated rocker, along with nonprofit Operation Finally Home and representatives from Pulte Homes, presented Sgt. Davin Dumar and his wife Dana with a mortgage-free 2,600-square-foot property that will be finished by the end of 2012, The Oakland Press reports.

“First of all, welcome home,” Rock said. “You are going to receive a fully-furnished home, top to bottom. Thank you for your service.”  More

Croatia – On a barren highway in Croatia, Faith Dickey battles the wind to walk across nylon webbing between two speeding trucks just before they both drive into separate tunnels.

In the incredible footage, the wind is so strong the Ms Dickey initially falls off the webbing on the first truck before getting back up and completing the impressive stride between the two trucks.

Fire truck stolen while firefighters at emergency call

Atlantic City, New Jewsey – Atlantic City police are searching for the person responsible for taking a fire truck while firefighters worked to free patrons trapped in an elevator.

Around 4:00 a.m., firefighters from Engine 7 were called to rescue several people trapped in an elevator at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino.

Hotel security reported at least a dozen people stuck inside on the fourth floor.

Firefighters were able to free the patrons within 20 minutes.

While fire crews worked, someone jumped into the truck and drove it about a block away before leaving it unattended.  More

Man installed cameras to tape woman, toddler in bathroom

Salem, Massachusetts – A Massachusetts man is accused of rigging cameras underneath a trailer and then hiding there while video-recording a woman and her toddler son as they used the bathroom.

The woman, who resides at 15 Friendship Drive, called police when she saw movement in the air duct in her bathroom floor, looked into it and saw a man peering up at her from underneath the floor vent.

“Hello,” the man said, and she immediately called 911.She told police she knew the man, who they identified as Christian Hobbs, 44, of Orleans, Mass., because she bought the trailer from him and he had done some work on it two weeks ago.

Hobbs was walking south on Route 28 when police located and confronted him. “I did it, it was me under the trailer,” he blurted out to the officers, according to a press release. He was arrested without incident.   More

Diverted Air France flight asks passengers to pitch in for gas

PARIS – An emergency layover in Syria’s capital was bad enough. Then passengers on Air France Flight 562 were asked to open their wallets to check if they had enough cash to pay for more fuel.

The plane, heading from Paris to Lebanon’s capital, diverted amid clashes near the Beirut airport on Wednesday.

Low on fuel, it instead landed in Damascus, the capital of neighboring Syria, where a civil war is raging.

An Air France spokesman explained Friday that the crew inquired about passenger cash only as a “precautionary measure” because of the “very unusual circumstances.”

3-year-old boy found sitting alone in a store aisle at night

FORT PIERCE, Florida - The crying of a 3-year-old boy sitting alone in a store aisle at night finally attracted a clerk's attention.


The toddler was so upset, he could only ask "where was his mommy," according to a police report. He couldn't remember his mother's last name and a call over the store's public address system drew no response. A search outside the Deal's Dollar Tree, in the 400 block of Georgia Avenue, also was unsuccessful.

Finally an hour later, at 9:44 p.m., a gold-colored minivan drove up with the mother, Philleana Peak, 30 (Picture) and grandmother as police were at the store. The mother "seemed confused when approached about the whereabouts of her child," according to the police report. "She said she thought he was in the vehicle at the time she left the store.

"But couldn't find him when they got home," the report states.

Yet no one called 911, police said, and she allegedly couldn't explain hourlong absence.  More

The village beat Scratchy Bottom, also in Dorset, and Brokenwind in Aberdeenshire to top the list of places with the most unfortunate names in the UK.

Dorset can boast three of the top ten, with Happy Snoring coming in tenth in the table which came as a result of polling 1,773 people.

Family cares for 90 children

MIAMI, Florida – Many parents know how difficult it can be raising children. Try taking care of ninety kids.

For the past 12 years, one South Florida couple took in over ninety foster children. Lisa and Jorge Alvarez began back in 1997, when they decided to adopt a baby after several unsuccessful attempts to get pregnant.

“The doctor suggested fertility drugs. We were going to have to refinance the home to get the fertility drugs. The health insurance ran out so I thought God had another plan for us.”

That’s when they adopted Natasha, now 12 years old. In the months that follow, Lisa learned there were many more children in need so they decided to open up their home.

Woman Tries to Smuggle Deer Genitals in Purse

Russia – Employees at the Blagoveshchensk-Heihe international passenger checkpoint in Russia’s Far Eastern Amur Region detained a Chinese woman attempting to smuggle dried deer genitals in her purse, customs employee Vitaly Shebanov said.

Deer genitals are used in alternative medicine as an aphrodisiac in China thought to treat impotence and frigidity.

“The woman was trying to smuggle dried derivatives (parts of wild animals). Three red deer genital organs were discovered.

The Chinese woman did not declare the deer genitals in her customs statement and faces a fine. Full Article

Pet owners spend big bucks on dental work to give dogs dazzling smiles

Australia – Pet owners are spending up big on orthodontic braces, cosmetic dental work, root canal fillings, polishes and mouth washes to give their pooches dazzling, no-gap smiles and “kissable breath”.

Veterinary surgeon Kevin Cruickshank said: “There is a big shift in how pet owners look after their pets. They want them to fit in with the family, and many are treated like children.”

Image-conscious owners wanted their pets to look good – and there is nothing fun about “doggy kisses” by an animal with severe gum disease, said Dr Cruickshank, who runs the Gold Coast Vet Surgery, which has a specialist dental suite.

“I have come across pet-owners who have braces put on their dogs because the teeth are crooked, or get teeth fixed for cosmetic reasons to avoid gaps. Full Article

New Denny’s To Include Full Bar With Wedding Chapel

Denny’s says its newest 24-hour diner in Las Vegas will feature a full bar and a wedding chapel.

The restaurant announced that it plans to open a flagship diner by the end of the year in downtown Las Vegas’ Neonopolis shopping complex.

The 6,400-square-foot eatery will include an interactive photo booth where patrons can take their photos with Vegas-themed props and share them on social media sites.

The restaurant will also offer a range of wedding packages at its on-site chapel, some including wedding cakes made of Denny’s Pancakes. Full Article

Boy raised $25,000 dollars for World War II Veterans, fined by inspector

CHEWELAH, Washington – A Chewelah student who has raised more than $25,000 dollars for World War II Veterans is facing a hefty fine for his good deeds.

12-year-old Justin Peterson holds fundraisers year round for the Honor Flight Program. Last Saturday, he held another fundraiser at the Chewelah City Park.

While selling hamburgers, a health inspector stopped by Peterson’s booth and fined him $170 for not having the proper food permit.

Peterson said, “She charged us for it and I was kind of sad. I was just trying to raise money for vets.”

The Health District isn’t forgiving the fines, but board members have agreed to pay them off using their own money. Full Article

Widespread fraud in taxpayer ID program

Washington DC – A recently released report shows widespread tax fraud in connection with the federal government’s Individual Taxpayer Identification Number program.

The U.S. Treasury inspector general report accuses the IRS of discouraging employees from reviewing applications for the ID numbers, which are generally from non-resident workers.

The inspector general specifically said there were 154 mailing addresses that were used 1,000 or more times on applications, including 15,795 numbers assigned to a Phoenix address.

The report, which evaluated the processing year 2011, also found inadequate controls can result in the numbers being assigned to people who have not proved their identity or foreign status, which can result in fraudulent tax returns.

The inspector general also found 10 individual addresses were used for filing 53,994 tax returns and receiving $86.4 million in fraudulent tax refunds. Full Article

Fans of smoked salmon, crab meat, avocados, cucumbers and wasabi, can dine to their delight for a mere half-thousand dollars.

Starting at $500, dinner packages can include 5 to 6 feet of sushi.

“The chef basically makes an omakase, which is the Japanese word for chef’s choice,” said Nathan Lieberman, the owner of King Fu Kitchen and Sushi. Full Article

Woman suffers facial injuries in backyard snowmobile crash

Cleveland, NY – A Weedsport woman suffered facial injuries when a snowmobile she was moving in Cleveland accelerated suddenly.

Brandy Y. Rose, 25, and Jack M. Taskey, 28, both of 2584 Earl St., Weedsport, were operating snowmobiles in the yard of 130 Center St. in Cleveland shortly before 11 a.m.

According to Oswego County sheriff’s deputies, Rose accelerated, colliding with the rear of Taskey’s snowmobile. Rose fell from the machine which ricocheted off Taskey’s sled, running her over.

Rose suffered injuries to her face that left her with 28 stitches and fractures to an eye socket and cheek, she said in an interview this afternoon.

The two were moving the snowmobiles to avoid killing the grass in one part of the yard, said Taskey’s aunt, Jackie Taskey. Full Article
